HOW TO REDUCE RISKS OF SLIP, TRIP, AND FALL IN THE WORKPLACE
Walking/Working Surfaces are literally everywhere you can step in the workplace, which means that slip, trip, and fall hazards lurk everywhere, but a good safety program can reduce those risks.
Slips, trips, and falls are among the most common causes of workplace injuries, according to OSHA. Good housekeeping practices are critical in the workplace because they reduce the likelihood of slip, trip, and fall incidents.
SLIP :
Slips happen when there is insufficient friction or traction between your feet (footwear) and the walking or working surface, causing you to lose your balance.
TRIPS:
Trips happen when your foot (or lower leg) collides with something and your upper body continues to move, throwing you off balance.
To avoid slips and falls, make sure that all walking and working surfaces are free of hazards such as:
- Boards that are loose
- Floors that are uneven
- Cables and extension cords
- Spills and leaks
- Nails and other protruding objects
- Holes
- Trash, boxes, or other containers
- Rugs or lose mats
- Various pieces of equipment
- Surfaces that are slick
- The area's lighting is inadequate.
- Unmarked level shifts
A safety meeting on slips, trips, and falls with all staff is recommended at least once a year. Make sure to cover these important points during the safety meeting to prevent slips, trips, and falls in the workplace.
Always wipe up spills right away, and where necessary, put up wet floor warning signs.
Keep doors clear of obstructions and cords, cables, materials, and equipment out in the walkway.
Use only non-slip floor mats and apply non-skid or anti-slip coatings to work surfaces.
Make sure that proper hygiene is upheld.
When working on or near potentially slippery surfaces, use appropriate slip-resistant footwear.
Avoid sprinting and walk slowly, paying attention to the path in front of you.
Always utilize the handrail and take one step at a time when climbing stairs.
When you are walking, avoid carrying anything that will obscure your vision.
Always use a ladder instead of standing on a chair to reach high up.
