Fire Prevention And Protection Safe Practices & Fire Watch Requirements

Fire Prevention And Protection

By removing or minimizing flammable or explosive materials or vapors by preventing them from building up, you can eliminate fire and explosion dangers. The welding supervisor's job should include the procedures for creating a space safe for welding and the testing carried out to make sure there are no fire or explosion threats.

Special Precautions for Fire Prevention

                Flammable material:

You should take steps to ensure that no readily combustible materials on the floor below are exposed to sparks that might drop through the floor wherever there are floor gaps or fissures in the flooring that you cannot seal. Apply the same safety measures to open doorways, broken windows, and wall cracks or holes.

              Combustible covers:

Never weld on a metal partition, wall, ceiling, or roof that has a combustible covering, as well as on combustible sandwich-type panel-built walls or partitions.

           Relocation of combustibles:

Relocate all combustibles if at all practicable at least 35 feet (10.7 m) away from the construction site. When moving cannot be done:

Combustibles should be shielded with flameproof coverings, metal or asbestos guards, or curtains.

                   FLOORS:

where combustible items, such as paper scraps, wood shavings, or textile fibres, are present (10.7 m). As well:

Keep floors damp, cover them with damp sand, or screen them from fire if they are combustible.

In areas where flooring have been damp down, protect people operating arc welding or cutting equipment from shock.

               Ducts:

Protect or shut down ducts and conveyor systems that might carry sparks to distant combustibles.

Combustible walls:

Where cutting or welding is done near walls, partitions, ceiling, or roof of combustible construction, provide fire-resistant shields or guards to prevent ignition.

       Non-combustible walls:

If you need to do welding on a metal wall, partition, ceiling, or roof, prevent ignition of combustibles on the other side, preferably by relocating combustibles.

Where you are not able to relocate the combustibles, be sure to provide a fire watch on the opposite side of the work.

                 Pipes:

If the job is close enough to produce ignite by conduction, avoid cutting or welding on pipes or other metal that is in touch with combustible walls, partitions, ceilings, or roofs.

                 Extinguishers:

Place the appropriate extinguishing apparatus in a convenient location and keep it in a ready-to-use condition at all times. Fire-extinguishing tools could include any of the following, depending on the kind and quantity of the combustible material:

                     pails of water,
                     buckets of sand,
                     hoses, or
                     portable extinguishers.

When working with electrical equipment, use safe work practises??

When working with electrical equipment, use safe work practices?? Safe Work Practices             When the device is being serviced or maintained, disconnect it from the source.              Before doing maintenance or repairs on electrical equipment , disconnect the power supply.              If handling plugged-in equipment is required, wear non-conductive gloves, and insulated-sole shoes, and ensure that all contacting components are dry.               Keep the other hand away from any conductive material if it is safe to work with just one hand. By taking this action, mishaps involving current via the chest cavity are decreased.               Due to condensation problems, it is necessary to use electrical equipment in cold rooms as little as possible.               If using these spaces is necessary, the device must be mounted to a wall or vertical panel.               The equipment power must be turned off at the main switch or circuit breaker and unplugged if the gadget react
